Lugol's liquid 5% is an aqueous solution of pure iodine in potassium iodide. Developed in 1829 by Jean Lugol, it is an example of a solution obtained by solubilization. Elemental iodine is very difficult to dissolve in water, but thanks to the presence of potassium iodide, which acts as a solubilizer in this system, it is possible to obtain an iodine solution at the desired concentration (in practice, 1%, 2%, or 5%). Lugol's liquid at a concentration of 5% is a guarantee of quality.
