The Sandflower (Helichrysum arenarium) has a long tradition in European ethnobotany as a plant attributed with positive effects on the health of the liver and gallbladder, among other things. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family and is found wild in both Europe and Central Asia. The Latin name of the plant is derived from the Greek words helios - 'sun' and chrysos - 'gold'. This refers to the golden shimmering color of the plant's inflorescence.

The most important biologically active compounds found in the plant are flavonoids and flavanones, but also other compounds such as carotenoids. However, it is primarily the presence of flavonoids that contributes to the positive properties of the herb (1).
