Vitamin D is a substance that occurs in several forms. We distinguish vitamins D1 (calciferol), D2 (ergocalciferol), and D3 (cholecalciferol). The metabolic effects of the various forms of vitamin D are similar, except that they differ in the type of protein in the plasma.
