Black healers have used devil's claw for thousands of years to treat many ailments. The only place on earth where this miraculous plant grows is the Kalahari Desert in southwest Africa. In this extremely arid region, with virtually no vegetation, devil's claw had to develop a special root system to retain moisture. When it grows to a depth of 120 cm, it branches out into a bundle of tuberous roots reminiscent of potatoes. 100 kilograms of these roots yield six kilograms of medicinal raw material.
It gets its name from the appearance of thorny pods that develop from bright red flowers. These pods, like devil's claws, are so strong that they require pliers to remove them from animals' hooves.
Each root is individually dug up, cut, dried, and grated. The result is a sticky substance that is difficult to handle. European settlers first encountered this extraordinary African herb in the early 20th century. One of them sent samples from Dr. Bernhard Zorn, head of the Institute of Physiology and Chemistry at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany.
Of course, there were therapeutic experiments on rats first. They induced gout using formaldehyde, and when inflammation developed after 12-14 days, the root was administered as an infusion, orally, and by injection. Three series of experiments were conducted. After five weeks of treatment with devil's claw, swelling was significantly reduced and normal foot movement was restored, while the control group experienced little spontaneous gout relief.
The famous Swiss herbalist, after studying devil's claw as a health remedy, recommends that everyone take an annual treatment with the root, as it removes toxic residues from our body and allows us to live a healthier life.
