The only place on earth where this magnificent plant grows is the Kalahari Desert in southwest Africa. In this extremely arid region, with virtually no vegetation, devil's claw must have developed a special root system to retain moisture. It grows to a depth of 120 cm and branches out into a bundle of potato-like, tuberous roots. One hundred kilograms of these roots yield six kilograms of active ingredient-rich raw material.
It gets its name from the appearance of the thorny pods that develop from the bright red flowers. These pods are like the devil's claws—they are so strong that pliers are needed to free animals' hooves from them. Each root is dug up individually, sliced, dried, and pureed. The result is a sticky substance that is difficult to handle.

Devil's claw has anti-inflammatory properties and relieves various types of pain. It is also an excellent antioxidant, preventing stress and reducing the loss of cellular vitality.
