What is licorice?

Licorice - Glycyrrhiza L. - is a plant recognizable by its pinnate leaves and red, blue, or purple flowers reminiscent of pea blossoms. However, what's crucial for us is what's not visible at first glance: the licorice root.

The most important properties of this plant lie in this root, and it is the rhizome that is used in traditional medicine and care. It is found in its natural form in Asian countries and Southern Europe, but it is also cultivated in Poland. Licorice is best known for its candies and jelly beans, but not everyone likes their taste. In recent years, its rich health-promoting properties have been increasingly utilized.

Liquorice - Properties

Licorice has many properties that have been valued for centuries. As early as the 16th and 17th centuries, it was used as an expectorant for upper respiratory tract infections, relieving a bothersome cough. Interestingly, thanks to its antibacterial properties, sweet licorice reduces the number of Streptococcus mutans —the green streptococcus , which is part of the natural bacterial flora of the oral cavity and a major factor in the development of caries and other dental diseases. This is supported by statistics: In the Netherlands and Scandinavia, where licorice candies are very popular, the caries rate is between 2 and 10 percent.

Liquorice and stomach and duodenal ulcers

Licorice accelerates the healing of stomach and duodenal ulcers and also regenerates the irritated gastric mucosa. Therefore, a decoction of licorice root is used in the treatment of these conditions. Some recommend its use after gastrointestinal surgery, but this should be discussed with a specialist beforehand.

Application:

It is recommended to add 1 teaspoon of the root to 1 liter of water and then boil it covered for 5-7 minutes. Let the decoction stand for 15 minutes and then strain. Drink twice a day, about one hour before meals.

Contraindications

Despite its many valuable properties, licorice should be used with extreme caution. People with high blood pressure, pregnant women, and nursing mothers should avoid it. Prolonged use of this plant can cause swelling, dizziness, and cardiac arrhythmias. It is also not recommended for people with liver or kidney cirrhosis.

Chronically ill people and those taking multiple medications should consult a doctor before taking licorice supplements.
