Spirulina is a microscopic algae that grows in the lakes of Africa and Central and South America. It contains up to 60% protein. It is a source of natural iodine, selenium, iron, valuable B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12), and unsaturated fatty acids. The protein it contains consists of up to 18 amino acids, 8 of which are esogenic amino acids, meaning those that are not produced by the body and must be obtained from food. Due to its high-quality protein, spirulina is popular in vegan and vegetarian diets.
Iron, a source of which is spirulina, plays a role in the body's oxygen transport to cells. It is also involved in the production of red blood cells and hemoglobin and supports the proper functioning of the immune system. It's worth noting that iron from this algae is better absorbed than iron from animal sources.
Iodine is involved in maintaining normal cognitive function and the functioning of the nervous system and helps maintain healthy skin. Selenium contributes to the maintenance of healthy hair and nails, supports the proper function of the immune system and thyroid, and protects cells from oxidative stress.
Vitamin B6, found in spirulina, contributes to maintaining proper energy metabolism and aids in the proper production of red blood cells. It contributes to reducing fatigue and maintaining normal psychological functions. Vitamin B12 supports the functioning of the nervous and immune systems.
Spirulina has two types of pigments: green chlorophyll, blue phycocyanin, and antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamin E. Thanks to them, it has antioxidant and cleansing properties.
