The trace element selenium is primarily involved in the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which, together with vitamin E, prevents free radical damage to cell membranes. It also has a positive effect on skin, hair, and nails, helping to keep them in good condition. Furthermore, it can inhibit the aging process. Low selenium levels can manifest themselves in a number of health problems related to free radical damage, including premature aging. Note: Research shows that inorganic salts such as sodium selenate are less well absorbed and biologically less active than the organic forms of selenium: selenomethionine and selenium-enriched yeast.
