Pterostilbene is a version of the resveratrol molecule that has been slightly modified by nature by swapping two small chemical substituents. However, this minor substitution means that when administered orally, pterostilbene is four times better absorbed than resveratrol, making it much more potent. For this reason, pterostilbene has been called a "more potent resveratrol." However, some authors point out that not all of the effects of the two nutrients exactly overlap, so this view is not entirely accurate.

Numerous studies have been conducted on isolated cells, animal models and human volunteers, confirming the extremely broad properties of resveratrol and pterostilbene.

Both pterostilbene and resveratrol are stilbene compounds that are structurally closely related, giving them similar functions. The two compounds work together to activate the longevity gene SIRT1.
