Propolis is a natural product produced by bees to seal gaps and protect the hive's entrance from the penetration of microorganisms that threaten their health and life, to attach the honeycombs to the walls, and to embalm intruders that have managed to enter the hive. It is a mixture of tree and bush resin and bee gland secretions with a characteristic balsamic smell and taste. Its color varies—from yellow-greenish to brown, brown and even black—depending on its chemical composition, which depends on the conditions of the place of production and the method of extraction. The chemical composition and significant variation of propolis depends on the vegetation of the geographical area from which it comes, the time of year, and the breed of bee.
