Arugula (Latin name Origanum vulgare L.), popularly called oregano, is a spice plant and herb that is found throughout Europe.

The main components of oregano are essential oils (thymol and carvacol). It also contains bitter substances, tannins, and rosmarinic acid.

The extract of this herb increases the secretion of saliva, digestive juices, and mucus (especially in the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract). Oregano has powerful antioxidant properties; one study even found it 42 times more active than apples. This is due to the synergistic action of phenolic compounds, particularly rosmarinic acid, which also has antioxidant properties and protects the DNA code.
