Broccoli or asparagus cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. italica Plenck) is an annual plant that is a cultivar of cabbage. Broccoli is considered the ancestor of cauliflower and probably originated in Cyprus. It was widely grown in ancient Greece and Rome. The name broccoli comes from the Italian word broccolo (Latin brachium), which means branch or arm. It is a cultivated plant, it does not occur in the wild.
Broccoli is an extremely healthy vegetable, among other things it has beneficial effects. Depending on the condition of the digestive tract, its regular consumption can prevent many diseases. Because of its low calorific value, low glycemic index and high protein content, kale is particularly recommended for people trying to lose weight. Broccoli is an excellent source of valuable vitamins - A, B, C and K - and minerals - magnesium, calcium, sodium, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and iron.
Broccoli can be eaten both raw and heat-treated. It is ideal as a healthy snack, as an addition to salads, soups or meat dishes.
