Peat is rich in bitumen, pectins, cellulose, humic acids, fulvic acids, lignins, phytohormones, and other compounds exhibiting biological activity. Inorganic substances are mainly macro- and microelements.

Medicinal peat is divided into high peat, transitional peat, and low peat. High peat forms above the groundwater table. 95% of this peat is organic, with no more than 5% inorganic. High peat is considered high-quality. It is characterized by high water absorption, high sorption properties, and low thermal conductivity. It is acidic.

Fenous moors form in overgrown lake basins, riverbeds, and wherever water has deposited minerals. Low-lying peat has an average composition of 75% organic and 25% inorganic matter, making it highly mineralized.
