Lemon balm belongs to the mint family (Labiatae), is native to the Mediterranean region, and has been known in Europe for centuries. For medicinal purposes, the leaves or the whole herb are harvested in June before flowering. The most well-known use of lemon balm leaves is their calming effect. The active ingredients contained in the plant also have diastolic, carminative, lactobacilliary, cholagogue, cholepoietic, and antiseptic effects. Lemon balm essential oil inhibits the growth of viruses, fungi, protozoa, and bacteria.
