Liposomes are structures that spontaneously form from the lipid moats. They take the form of vesicles filled with water (or an aqueous solution) measuring 0.01–1 micrometers, surrounded by a double lipid layer approximately 5 nanometers thick; therefore, they are also called phospholipid vesicles. Their shell resembles biological membranes. Phospholipid vesicles are biocompatible (consisting of the same components as our body's cell membranes) and small enough to penetrate blood vessel walls. Liposomes have the ability to transport both water and lipids, making them an ideal transport system for substances needed by our body's cells.
