Basil, or more commonly known as basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), also known as garden basil, Polish basil, balsam, basil, and sweet basil, is an annual plant in the Lyme family. It likely originated in tropical Africa; it is not currently found in the wild but is widely cultivated.
Basil is an exceptionally aromatic herb with a slightly sweet flavor that's a rich source of vitamins A, C, and B9, and minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and copper. This unique plant with elliptical leaves in a cool green hue also contains valuable flavonoids, saponins, and tannins.
Basil is a versatile spice. It's a great addition to vegetable, meat, fish, risotto, and pizza dishes, as well as cakes and desserts.
