The broad bean (Vicia faba L.) is an edible annual plant in the Fabaceae family. Once found in the wild, it is now found only as a cultivated plant. Its place of origin is unknown, but the oldest evidence of cultivation of this tasty and healthy legume dates back to around 4,500 BC in Egypt.
Like soybeans, broad beans are recommended for vegetarians and vegans due to their high protein and fiber content. These green, flat beans, with their slightly sweet, slightly nutty flavor, also boast an impressive vitamin and mineral content; they are rich in iron, manganese, copper, vitamins C, E, A, K, thiamin, and riboflavin, among others. Due to their low fat and low calorie content, broad beans are also recommended as an ingredient in weight-loss programs.
Broad beans can be eaten dried, frozen, or fresh. To reduce the risk of bloating after consumption, soak the beans in hot water for one hour before cooking.
