The field thistle [Latin: Silybum marianum] is an annual cultivated plant in the daisy family (Asteraceae) that is also relatively easy to find in the wild. Due to its visual similarity, it is often confused with the common thistle. It is characterized by its pointed, prickly leaves and purple flowers. It differs from the thistle, among other things, in its height—it can grow up to 2 meters tall. It originates from the Mediterranean region and is now found primarily in Southern Europe, Egypt, Israel, and Turkey. The seeds (kernels) of the milk thistle are valued in herbal medicine.
