Bromelain is a digestive enzyme belonging to the group of hydrolases. Hydrolases can be active throughout the body when administered orally. The most well-known bromelain, bromelain, was recognized as an active ingredient as early as 1975 and has since been the subject of over 250 scientific papers. Bromelain is abundant in pineapples. Solgar offers bromelain from fresh pineapple, whereas most "cheap" supplements extract bromelain from the pineapple stem, which is different from the enzyme found in fruit.
