Bromelain is a digestive enzyme from the hydrolase group. Hydrolases can be active throughout the body when administered orally. The most well-known bromelain, bromelain, was recognized as an active ingredient as early as 1975 and has since been the subject of numerous scientific studies. Bromelain is abundant in pineapples. Solgar offers bromelain from fresh pineapple, whereas most other supplements extract bromelain from the pineapple stem, which is different from the enzyme found in fruit.
