Barberry occurs wild in Europe, it has settled mainly in Scandinavia and the British Isles, and is rare but widespread in southern and central Germany.
Barberry is known for its saponins, which support the digestive system and have diuretic properties. It also contains organic acids, pectins, and vitamins C and E, which act as antioxidants. Its high vitamin C content led to its being called the Polish lemon. Barberry improves digestion, supports immunity, and has antibacterial properties. It is also used as a liver support. It also has a calming effect, thus increasing resistance to stress.
Barberry is not recommended for pregnant women and young children.
