Milk thistle is an herb that was used in ancient Greece and Rome and is still popular today. Milk thistle or Sylibum marianum belongs to the Asteraceae family. It comes from regions of the Mediterranean Sea, Southern Europe, North Africa and regions of Asia like India and Pakistan. It is an annual plant that flowers from July to August. Wild specimens can be found in Poland. The flowers are purple in color and the plant can grow up to 2 meters tall.
The main active ingredient it is known for is silymarin. However, it should be noted that it is also a source of flavonoids, phytosterols, vitamins such as vitamins C and K, histamine, tyramine, tannins, mineral salts and a high content of linoleic acid. Silymarin protects against substances that can damage liver cells. It supports regeneration and can help to detoxify the body. It also affects the production of new liver cells. It can help reduce bilirubin, which is a pigment that affects the yellow tint of the skin and eyeballs. Sylibym Marianum can help with the negative effects of traveling by car or boat, as well as with loss of appetite. Along with vitamin C, flavonoids exhibit antioxidant activity. They remove free radicals in the body that can negatively affect the human body. They also have a protective effect on the body's cells. They support the immune system, have a positive effect on the condition of the skin and can inhibit the aging process.
Choline is vitamin B4, which is mainly found in phospholipids and is involved in the proper functioning of the nervous system and brain development. It also affects the proper functioning of cell membranes, especially nerve cells. Supports the work of the brain and its activity related to memory. It also takes part in the regulation of the body's lipid metabolism and has a beneficial effect on the work of the liver.
