Borage is an annual plant belonging to the borage family. It is characterized by blue flowers shaped like a five-pointed star with an intense cucumber scent. The plant raw material is cold-pressed borage seeds, from which the oil is extracted. It is a rich source of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The most important of these is gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is present in the oil at 16-27% .

Gamma-linolenic acid is a source of essential fatty acids (EFAs). The name of these acids refers to the need to obtain them through food, as their synthesis does not occur in the human body. EFAs are also referred to as essential vitamin F in the diet, which comes from the English term "fatty acids."

The extent of GLA depends largely on the form of application . When applied externally, it penetrates only the stratum corneum of the epidermis and fills the intercellular space. When administered orally, it overcomes more barriers and penetrates the dermis.* The preparation has been enriched with vitamin E, which helps protect DNA, proteins, and lipids from oxidative damage.
