Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L. Poir.) also known as sweet potato, yam, sweet potato or kūmara is a perennial species native to Central and South America from the post-war family. Widely cultivated throughout the world, it grows mostly in the tropical zone. It came to Europe through the expeditions of Christopher Columbus. It does not grow in the wild.
Sweet potato is a sweet, juicy tuber with a conical shape and great utility. Varieties are available in yellow, red, brown, beige, white, orange and purple. It is a valuable source of vitamins and minerals. It impresses with its content of beta-carotene, B vitamins, vitamin C and iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium.
Sweet potatoes are a versatile alternative to potatoes, as mashed potatoes or fries. They can be baked, fried, steamed, or traditionally prepared, and added to desserts and sweet snacks.
