The only place on earth where this wonderful plant grows is the Kalahari Desert in southwest Africa. In this extremely arid region, with virtually no vegetation, devil's claw had to develop a special root system to retain moisture. When it grows to a depth of 120 cm, it branches out into a bundle of tuberous roots reminiscent of potatoes. 100 kilograms of these roots yield six kilograms of active ingredient.
It gets its name from the appearance of thorny pods that develop from bright red flowers. These pods are so strong, like devil's claws, that they require pliers to remove them from animals' hooves. Each root is dug up individually, sliced, dried, and grated. The result is a sticky substance that is difficult to handle.
Devil's claw has anti-inflammatory properties and relieves all types of pain. It also acts as an excellent antioxidant. It prevents stress and reduces the loss of cell viability.
