It comes from regions of the Mediterranean Sea, Southern Europe, North Africa and regions of Asia like India and Pakistan. It is an annual plant that flowers from July to August. Wild specimens can be found in Poland. The flowers are purple in color and the plant can grow up to 2 meters tall.
The main active ingredient it is known for is silymarin. However, it should be noted that it is also a source of flavonoids, phytosterols, vitamins such as vitamins C and K, histamine, tyramine, tannins, mineral salts and a high content of linoleic acid. Silymarin protects against substances that can damage liver cells. It supports regeneration and can help to detoxify the body. It also affects the production of new liver cells.
