Basil, or better basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), also known as garden basil, Polish basil, balsam basil and sweet basil, is an annual plant from the Lyme family. It probably comes from tropical Africa; It does not currently occur in the wild, but is readily cultivated.
Basil is an exceptionally aromatic spice with a slightly sweet taste that is a rich source of vitamins - A, C and B9 - and minerals - iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese and copper. In addition, this unique plant with elliptical leaves in a cool shade of green contains valuable flavonoids, saponins and tannins in its composition.
Basil is a versatile spice. It is well suited as an accompaniment to vegetable, meat, fish, risotto and pizza dishes as well as cakes and desserts.
