Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is found in all cells of the human body and is primarily involved in cellular energy production. It is especially recommended for people over 40 as a daily dietary supplement.
PQQ is a pyrroloquinoline quinone —a quinone molecule capable of reducing oxidants in our body. It is then recycled into its active form through the action of glutathione. It is similar in structure and action to a vitamin, yet it does not belong to that class of substances. PQQ is primarily a cofactor —a molecule that acts as an enhancer for enzymes that need help to function properly. This cofactor molecule carries electrons, which is crucial for the work of our energy-producing mitochondria.
PQQ was first identified as an enzyme cofactor in bacteria by biochemist Jens Hauge in 1964. It wasn't until 2003 that Japanese researcher Tadafumi Kato discovered that PQQ also occurs in rodents and other mammals, including humans.
