DESCRIPTION

ALA is a fatty acid compound that occurs naturally in the human body in the mitochondria and is involved in energy metabolism. ALA exists in two isomers: S-ALA (which is chemically synthesized) and R-ALA, which is produced by the body. Traditional chemical synthesis of alpha-lipoic acid produces a mixture of these two isomers. ALA is a potent antioxidant that dissolves in both water and fat, therefore neutralizing both water- and fat-soluble free radicals. ALA significantly influences the renewal of other antioxidants—vitamin C, glutathione, coenzyme Q10, and indirectly, vitamin E. Supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid demonstrates benefits in various situations of oxidative stress and in various situations of oxidative stress. Numerous studies show that alpha-lipoic acid helps lower blood sugar levels.
