Although common oregano occurs naturally in Northern Europe, it was widely used by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Lebiodora was already known to Aristotle, Hippocrates, and Dioscorides. Later, Paracelsus and Lonicerus, among others, wrote about it. Today, it is known not only in Mediterranean countries but is used worldwide.
Oregano oil has traditionally been used to improve digestion, the respiratory system, and the immune system, as well as for its antioxidant properties. It contains the phenolic compounds carvacrol and thymol, which scientists believe are responsible for oregano's beneficial properties. Carvacrol and thymol have been shown to inhibit the growth of various bacteria and fungi and may be helpful in maintaining a healthy balance of intestinal flora and good digestion.
Oregano has powerful antioxidant properties, and in one study, it was found to be 42 times more active than apples. This is due to the synergistic effect of phenolic compounds, particularly rosmarinic acid, which is also responsible for rosemary's antioxidant properties.
