Milk thistle is a herb that was already used in ancient Greece and Rome and is still popular today. Milk thistle, or Sylibum marianum, belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean, Southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia such as India and Pakistan. It is an annual plant that blooms from July to August. Wild specimens can be found in Poland. The flowers are purple, and the plant can grow up to 2 meters tall.
Its main active ingredient is silymarin. However, it should be noted that it is also a source of flavonoids, phytosterols, vitamins such as vitamins C and K, histamine, tyramine, tannins, mineral salts, and a high content of linoleic acid. Silymarin protects against substances that can damage liver cells. It supports regeneration and can help detoxify the body. It also influences the production of new liver cells. It can help reduce bilirubin, a pigment that affects the yellow hue of the skin and eyeballs. Silymarin marianum can help with the negative effects of traveling by car or boat, as well as with loss of appetite. Flavonoids, together with vitamin C, have antioxidant effects. They remove free radicals in the body that can have a negative impact on the human body. They also have a protective effect on the body's cells. As a result, they support the immune system, have a positive effect on the skin, and can inhibit the aging process.
Milk thistle oil is obtained by cold-pressing milk thistle seeds (Silybum marianum L.). The key to success is the selection of the highest quality raw materials, along with state-of-the-art pressing technology. Ripe, glossy, and optimally formed – this is the best raw material for pressing such valuable oil. Low pressing temperatures (no more than 40°C) ensure the preservation of the oil's most important active ingredients.
Milk thistle oil is characterized by a high content of unsaturated fats (80 g/100 g). It also contains natural plant sterols (β-sitosterol 38% and ^Δ7 -stigmasterol 22%).
Linoleic acid (LA) and plant sterols and stanols contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels.
